The Dean Hotel

This was a piece for the manager of the hotel, from a regular customer who wanted to say thanks.

It was incredibly daunting, but I think it is some of my best work.

Artist scout, multiple angles

The Dean Hotel commission, framed

Finished drawing, framed.

Reference

Scouted on site.

I had to construct the illustration from more than a dozen photos that I took myself.

It is a big building, and drawing the whole structure would have lessened the impact, so I focused on the central section.

Process

Built in passes.

What makes the piece is the way the light hits the building.

I added the guest entering and chose to leave the bus stop blank.

Early linework, with the structure locked in.

Detail

Corners, detail, and finish.

The windows are the highlight for me. Intense detail, each one realistic, and different.

But the brickwork is the star of the show, and the way the light hits it. I am very proud of this one.

Handover.

Getting to deliver the piece in person was a thrill.
