I draw what I can’t stop looking at.

Prints and original drawings from Dublin 8. Places, buildings, and corners of the city that caught and held my attention.

About the work

R.T. Ross on a Dublin 8 street

Photo: Ste Murray

I live in Dublin 8. Messy, dirty, new, old, freaky, gorgeous. I have been here over a decade and my eyes still lock onto things other people walk past.

I draw places that catch and hold my attention: pubs, lanes, shopfronts, buildings, and corners of the city that i've taken photos off multiple times over the years. I'm particularly drawn to places where I can imagine a vibrant history, or with unique stories. Often the places I draw are not long for this world.

The drawings are made by slowly, by hand in pencil / graphite and pen and ink, almost always in monochrome, from my own photographs. A single piece can take months or more than a year. The hard part is not the drawing. It is having the instinct to start, and the patience not to stop.

Practice in Public

I write about the drawings, the false starts, and the messy business of building an art practice from Dublin 8.

Commission a drawing

Houses, pubs, streets, wedding gifts, places with a story. If you have something you think cannot be drawn, that is exactly the kind of thing to bring me.
